Extension Springs Design Considerations:

In designing extension springs, basic design characteristics need to be considered.

The first characteristic is much room is needed to place an extension spring in our product or the working envelope. More importantly how much distance of travel will the extension spring need to have when deflected. Other considerations for basic extension spring design envelope or working space include:

  • Free Length (inside and outside the hooks)
  • Maximum Outside Diameter
  • Travel Distance
  • Preloaded Length
  • Type of Hook

The second major consideration in designing extension springs is how much force is needed to be generated?

This question when designing extension springs is more easily answered by thinking in terms of rate, which is pounds per inch of extension or distance traveled when pulled.
