Manufacturer of Flat Springs
Flat springs are typically custom springs and are made from jigs and specialized spring manufacturing tooling built by the spring manufacturer as a one-time spring manufacturing. They feature flat or near-flat coil shapes in a variety of sizes and thicknesses and are used to keep forces within restricted space conditions. When an external load is deflected onto the spring’s flat strips, a flat spring stores energy and then releases it.
Several materials are used including:
• Flat high carbon spring steel
• Stainless steel
• High-nickel specialty alloys
Ordering Flat Springs
Design formulas involve small deflections, never more than 25% of the spring free length, and can be less accurate than compression spring, extension spring, and torsion spring formulas with increased deflection. It’s recommended that assistance is obtained in the design of flat springs.
Katy Spring can assist customers with the sometimes complicated designs of these types of springs, also known as beam designs. We will need to know the following in order to assist with the design.
- Approximate spring load
- Environment that the flat spring will work in.
- The direction the flat spring will bend — additional spring stresses will occur if the flat spring deflects against the grain, or where there are sharp radii, or where holes are made in the flat spring material.
